Two-time defending champion Ely seeks its 11th state tournament trip in 16 years as the Eighth District Division II American Legion playoffs kick off today at two sites.
Esko plays Chisholm at 5 p.m., followed by host Ely meeting Brookston at 7:30 p.m. All veterans and active military personnel will be admitted free of charge and receive a hot dog and beverage at the Veterans Memorial Field concession stand.
At Cohasset, Taconite faces Carlton at 5 p.m. and Deer River plays Moose Lake at 7:30.
The eight-team double-elimination tournament continues Wednesday at Ely, Friday at Ely and Soudan, Saturday at Ely and the championship game Sunday at Ely. The champion advances to the state tournament Aug. 3-5 at Sacred Heart.
