Cycling: Surprised Sagan wins Tour’s second legA very surprised Peter Sagan claimed victory in the second stage of the Tour de France on Sunday.
Sagan, who took the overall lead with the win, was nonchalant as he crossed the line and later said he had no idea he was the first to finish the 113.7-mile stage from Saint-Lo to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin.
“I’m very surprised I won, because I was thinking there were still two guys in front,” the Slovakian said.
The stage victory was Sagan’s first at the Tour de France since 2013.
France’s Julian Alaphilippe finished second and Spain’s Alejandro Valverde was third. Sagan held off Alaphilippe by the length of a bike while landing ownership of the yellow jersey.
“It is the first time in my career to have the yellow jersey, and it is unbelievable,” Sagan said. “I’m already wearing a nice jersey (world champion), but this one is also very nice.”
Sagan holds an eight-second lead over Alaphilippe and 10 seconds over Valverde in the overall standings.
Two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador of Spain crashed for the second day and the accident cost him 48 seconds of time.
Australia’s Richie Porte had an even worse experience as a punctured tire cost him 1 minute, 45 seconds of time.
