Curling: Northland trio in new event

Three Northland curlers will take part in the inaugural USA Curling U18 National Championships, beginning Thursday at the Milwaukee Curling Club in Cedarburg, Wis.

Three Northland curlers will take part in the inaugural USA Curling U18 National Championships, beginning Thursday at the Milwaukee Curling Club in Cedarburg, Wis.

Jonathon Harstad of Duluth is on the Minnesota 1 boys team while Gilbert's Michael Mattson is on Minnesota 2. Rebecca Miles of Duluth is on the Minnesota 1 girls team.

Twenty-four teams of athletes age 18 and under will compete in the four-day championship to determine which teams will represent the United States at the upcoming U18 Player's Championship on April 14-16 in Guelph, Ontario.

The 12 men's and 12 women's teams will be split into two pools each for a preliminary round robin. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals on Sunday.
