Yellowjackets edge Blue Devils

Wisconsin-Superior’s Reed Stark scored on a ricochet goal at the 5:47 mark of the third period to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 win over Wisconsin-Stout in the first game of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff series Saturday in Menomonie.

The teams failed to score in the first two periods, but after Stark’s score an interference penalty on Conor MacLean at the 7:16 mark of the third period gave the Blue Devils an opportunity to tie the game.

Instead of getting a goal, however, Logan Nelson took a cross-checking penalty about a minute into the power play, resulting in 4-on-4 action and then a short Spartans power play.

The Blue Devils pulled goalie Zack Cloutier with 1:38 left in the game, but were unable to score with the extra attacker.

The teams will play again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Menomonie. If the Blue Devils win, they will force a mini-game following the end of Saturday’s game.
