College baseball: Wisconsin-Superior tops Crown to reach UMAC title game
Yellowjackets will play for an NCAA tournament berth on Saturday in St. Paul.
ST. PAUL — Wisconsin-Superior advanced to the UMAC Championship game on Saturday via a 9-3 win over Crown College on Friday at Reynolds Field.
The fourth-seeded Yellowjackets will play either No. 2 Crown or No. 1 Northwestern at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul. UWS has beaten both already in the last two days, topping Northwestern on Thursday 11-5.
Against Crown on Friday, Superior plated runs in five straight innings starting with the second after falling behind 1-0 after the first. The Yellowjackets then drove in three more runs for good measure in the eighth before surrendering two in the ninth.
Catcher Isaac Fugere led the UWS bats, going 2-for-5 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored. UWS pitcher Bryce Flanagan went the distance, giving up three runs — two earned — off six hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Crown will play UWS again in Saturday's title game after knocking out Northwestern 7-1 on Friday night. They will need to beat Superior twice on Saturday to capture the UMAC title and automatic berth in the NCAA Division III baseball tournament.
