FAYETTE, Iowa — Junior guard Jake Hilmer had 27 points and six assists as No. 16 Upper Iowa handed No. 5 Minnesota Duluth its first loss of the season with a 94-85 victory in NSIC men’s basketball Saturday before 542 spectators at Dorman Memorial Gym.

Senior guard Joe Smoldt added 17 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals for the Peacocks (16-2 overall, 10-2 NSIC), who had five players score in double figures.

Upper Iowa blitzed the nets, shooting 48.3% from the field (29 of 60), including 57.9% from 3-point range.

Starters Charlie Katona (20 points), Drew Blair (17), Austin Andrews (17), Jack Middleton (16) and Joshua Brown (15) all scored at least 15 points apiece for UMD (16-1, 9-1) but the Bulldogs got no scoring from their bench. Andrews also had team-highs of 11 rebounds and five assists.

UMD shot well — 45.9% from the field and 34.8% from 3-point range — just not well enough to keep up with the red-hot Peacocks.
