DULUTH — Minnesota Duluth runners finished in the top 13 places during the women's 5-kilometer race at the Bulldog Open cross country event on Friday, Sept. 9 at Lester Park Golf Course.
First among those was junior Maddie Verkerke, who finished in 18 minutes, 4.1 seconds, with teammate Morgan Radel, a senior, nine seconds behind. Freshman Elizabeth VanLoon was third in 18:43.2.
St. Scholastica finished second with 54 points and Wisconsin-Superior third with 71. Melisaa Pfeiffer (16th, 20:55.6) was the Saints' top finisher, while Jeanna Scanlon (19th, 21:58.4) led UWS.
The UMD men were one point away from a perfect score, taking the top four places. Jack VanKempen was first across in the line in 15:22, with unattached runner Mike Friedman 2.5 seconds back.
Michael Butterfield was seventh overall for UWS in 15:50.7, while Nathan Neu was St. Scholastica's top runner, 11th in 16:13.7. UWS recorded 56 points, 10 better than the third-place Saints.

UMD breaks Minot hex
The UMD women's soccer team won at Minot State for the first time in eight years on Friday, bagging a second-half winner off a corner kick in a 1-0 victory in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener for both teams.
Sarah Stange was the last Bulldog to poke the ball in, after several shot attempts from Anna Tobias and Erin Walpole in the 64th minute.
UMD had an 8-6 advantage in shots on target, getting six saves from Abigail Gotham in net.
The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 NSIC) remain in North Dakota for a Sunday noon kickoff vs. Mary.

Bulldogs wipe out Beavers
No. 14 Minnesota Duluth held its hosts to a negative (more errors than kills) hitting percentage for the match in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-15) dispatching of Minot State in the NSIC opener for both sides.
UMD, on the other hand, had only nine errors for the match, hitting .369. Minot State had 10 errors in each of the last two sets and finished at minus-.082.
Hope Schjenken had a match-best seven kills and had a hand in seven UMD blocks. Sydney Lanoue contributed five kills and a pair of aces. Madison Gordon dished out 20 assists and Kaylyn Madison was UMD's dig leader with 10.
The Bulldogs (9-0, 1-0 NSIC) play Saturday at Mary.
