College women's hockey: UMD wins Icebreaker

The Minnesota Duluth skaters scored and the Bulldogs defeated Colgate 3-1 on Saturday in the championship game of the Icebreaker at the Harbor Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

UMD's Gabbie Hughes opened the scoring with a goal on an assist from Anna Klein at 16:02 of the first period.

The Bulldogs' Kasundra Betinol made it 2-0 with a goal at 10:11 of the third on an assist from Maggie Flaherty.

Colgate shaved UMD's margin when Darcie Lappan scored at 10:04 of the third, but UMD's Ashton Bell scored at 18:53 on an assist from Sydney Brodt.

Bulldogs goalie Maddie Rooney stopped 22 of 23 shots.

UMD returned to league play against St. Cloud State at 7:07 p.m. Friday in Duluth. The teams play again Saturday at 4:07 p.m.
