UMD UPDATE
The Bulldogs open the season with four players out with injuries -- defensemen Jessica Wong, Tea Villila and Bridgette Lacquette, and forward Vanessa Thibault. UMD finished last season 21-14-1 and was fourth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Vying to replace goalie Jennifer Harss are freshmen Kayla Black of Blyth, Ontario, and Sofia Carlstrom of Dandeyd, Sweden.
WHITECAPS UPDATE
The Whitecaps, based in Minneapolis, are part of the two-team Western Women's Hockey League, along with the Manitoba Maple Leafs. Minnesota's leaders are former UMD All-American center Jenny Potter, 33, of Edina, Minn.; defenseman Winny Brodt-Brown, 34, of Roseville, Minn., who played at the University of Minnesota; and forward Brooke White-Lancette, 33, of Berkeley, Calif., who played at Northeastern University.
