The Bulldogs scored three goals in the first period and then held on for a 3-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association women's victory over the Buckeyes Friday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Kayla Black stopped 29 shots in improving to 4-4-2 on the year, including 12 in the first period as UMD set the early tone. Jamie Kenyon got the scoring started at 7:43 in the first, with Lara Stalder putting the Bulldogs up 2-0 at 14:35 later in the period.

Jenna McParland got the game winner on a feed from Kenyon and Tea Villila just 13 seconds before the first intermission for the Bulldogs (5-4-2 overall, 3-4-2 WCHA).

In didn't take Ohio State (3-5-2, 2-5-2) long to make things interesting, with Kate Matheny and Sara Schmitt scoring less than five minutes into the second period. But that's as close as the Buckeyes would get as Black and the Bulldogs put down the defensive clamps.

The same teams rematch at 2:07 p.m. today in Columbus.
