College women's hockey: Bulldogs shut down Team Russia

Apparently glasnost was not in effect Tuesday night at Amsoil Arena.

Jamie Kenyon and Meghan Huertas each scored two goals and Sofia Carlstrom posted a shutout in her first game in goal to lead Minnesota Duluth to an 8-0 women's hockey exhibition victory over Team Russia.

Carlstrom, third on the Bulldogs' depth chart at goaltender, didn't face a shot in the first period and finished with 12 saves.

Defenseman Tea Villila, who is a candidate for the Finnish Olympic team, scored a power-play goal at 8:47 of the first period. Duluth Marshall graduate Emma Stauber added the second goal at 17:45 of the first and Kenyon notched her first 11:30 into the second.

UMD scored five times on 12 shots in the third period, including a pair of goals by Huertas. Defenseman Sidney Morin totaled three assists, while Kenyon tacked on a pair of assists for a four-point night.

The teams meet again next Monday, after the Russians face a pair of Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams in exhibitions later this week and UMD meets Wisconsin in league games Friday and Saturday.

r The Bulldogs announced the signing of four players to letters of intent Tuesday. Duluth Denfeld senior Alexia Klaas, who will also play softball at UMD, defenseman Jessica Healey of Edmonton, Alberta, defenseman Catherine Daoust of Ile Blizard, Quebec, and defenseman Lynn Alstrup of Warroad, Minn., all signed.
