Minnesota Duluth goaltender Kayla Black stopped 16 shots in the third period, three more in overtime and all three shootout attempts as the Bulldogs overcame second-ranked Wisconsin 1-0 in a shootout after playing to a 2-2 tie Friday night at Amsoil Arena.
UMD (7-5-3 overall, 5-5-3 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) earned an extra point in the standings to close within four points of the second-place Badgers (11-2-2, 7-2-2) after Megan Huertas scored the only goal in the three-round shootout.
Demi Crossman opened the scoring for UMD with her second goal of the season at 12:11 of the first period. The Badgers' Courtney Burke responded two minutes later.
Jamie Kenyon, a native of Sparta, Wis., notched her seventh goal of the season 8:19 into the second period to give UMD a 2-1 lead.
Madison Packer evened matters 61 seconds into the third period, but Black kept the game tied with her solid performance in net the rest of the way. The sophomore from Blyth, Ontario, has allowed only three goals in her last four games, including back-to-back shutouts against Ohio State and Bemidji State.
