College women's basketball: UMD draws familiar foe in NCAA opener

Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State-Moorhead will reprise their NSIC final when they square off again in an NCAA Division II women's basketball first-round tournament game Friday.

Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State-Moorhead will reprise their NSIC final when they square off again in an NCAA Division II women’s basketball first-round tournament game Friday.

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs (23-6) and fifth-seeded Dragons (26-6) will meet in a Central Region quarterfinal at a time to be determined at Fort Hays, Kan. It will mark the fourth time the rivals will face each other this season.

UMD beat Moorhead 52-48 in the NSIC championship game March 5 in Moorhead. The teams split in the regular season, with the Bulldogs claiming a 69-53 home win and the Dragons winning 72-56 on their home court.

Other region matchups pit top-seeded Fort Hays State (30-1) against Pittsburg State (21-8); No. 2 seed Southwestern Oklahoma State (30-1) against Emporia State (22-8); and defending national champion and No. 3 seed Central Missouri (24-6) against Lindenwood (21-7). The Jennies of Central Missouri ended Ashland’s 73-game winning streak in the NCAA Division II final a year ago.
