Minnesota Duluth volleyball made its first entries in the win column on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, winning both of its matches at the Keweenaw Classic at the Student Development Complex in Houghton, Michigan.
The Bulldogs came from behind to defeat Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-18) and then routed Lake Superior State 3-0 25-17, 25-7, 25-23).
UMD made 10 hitting errors in losing the first set to Parkside but steadily overwhelmed the Rangers with a total of 12 aces in the match, seven of them from Cianna Selbitschka. The offense got better as the match went on, as UMD posted a higher hitting percentage than UWP in each of the last three sets.
Selbitschka added 12 kills and 15 digs. Summer Ballard added 11 kills, while Sydney Lanoue had a team-high 22 digs. Rachel Hedman and Jessica Pappas had 10 kills apiece for Parkside.
Against the Lakers, Selbitschka added 15 kills and Kate Berg 12. UMD hit a stupendous .522 in the second set while holding LSSU to negative (more errors than kills) in each of the first two sets. Camdyn Odykirk had six kills and three blocks to lead LSSU.
