College track and field: UMD women win NSIC indoors

Freshman Samantha Rivard won two events to lead the Minnesota Duluth women's team to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference indoor track and field title Saturday at Bemidji, Minn.

Freshman Samantha Rivard won two events to lead the Minnesota Duluth women's team to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference indoor track and field title Saturday at Bemidji, Minn.

The Bulldogs rolled up 143 points to dethrone defending champion University of Mary by four points and capture their first conference indoor crown since 2004. Augustana College (91) was next, followed by Minnesota State-Mankato (77.16).

Rivard finished as the meet's leading point-getter (28), winning the mile in 4 minutes, 57.66 seconds and the 5,000-meter run in 17:06.50. She also took second in the 3,000 meters Friday.

Also contributing for the Bulldogs were freshman Breanna Colbenson (second, 17:18.84) and junior Alexandra Rudin (fifth, 17:38.62) in the 5,000 meters; sophomore Hannah Olson (fourth, 5:05.88) in the mile; junior Victoria Zoller (third, 2:17.82) and junior Chanel Miller (fourth, 8.88) in the 60-meter hurdles; and junior Amelia Maher in the 600 meters (fifth, 1:36.70).

r UMD's Cole Toepfer won the mile run, placed second in the 3,000-meter run and third in the 5,000 while finishing the NSIC championship meet as the co-leader in individual point production. The Bulldog men finished fifth at the conference meet in Bemidji.
