Wisconsin-Superior hopes to end St. Scholastica's seven-year reign as UMAC men's indoor champions as the conference track and field meet begins today on the St. Scholastica campus.

The Saints have yet to lose a men's indoor conference championship, but UWS was runners-up a year ago and won the outdoor title.

The Yellowjackets are strong in the field events, especially the duo of C.J. Pillath and Thomas Udenberg. Udenberg, a sophomore from Cloquet, ranks first in the UMAC and 20th in Division III in the shot put with a mark of 52 feet, 11.5 inches that is already better than his record-setting performance a year ago. Just a sophomore, Pillath leads the conference in the weight throw with a toss of 58-4 that is 14th in the nation.

In addition, the UWS pair of Alex Dzikonski and Tyler Modderman-Anderson boast the top marks in the long jump and pole vault, respectively.

The Saints lost plenty of firepower to graduation, but Jacob Gallagher leads the conference with a time of 15 minutes, 35.3 seconds in the 5,000 meters and 8:56.84 in the 3,000 meters.

The meet begins at 4 p.m. today and concludes Saturday.

* Emi Trost and Breanna Colbenson are among a host of Minnesota Duluth athletes vying for titles at the NSIC Indoor Championships this weekend at Mankato, Minn. Trost, a junior All-American, already has qualified for the NCAA Division II meet by bettering the automatic standard in the 800 and is on the distance medley team that has reached the NCAA provisional standard.
