College track and field: CSS women, UWS men win UMAC

The St. Scholastica women took home four event titles Saturday to capture the UMAC Outdoor Championships by 68 points at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.

The St. Scholastica women took home four event titles Saturday to capture the UMAC Outdoor Championships by 68 points at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.

The Saints have won 12 of the past 13 UMAC outdoor titles. Bethany Lutheran College finished second with 156 points, while Wisconsin-Superior took third with 154.

Taylor Gibson won her second event of the meet Saturday, the 400 meters, with a time of 58.67 seconds, before joining Sammy Argir, Breanna Shofner and Mel Avinon to capture the 1,600 relay crown (4:01.71). Teammate Hannah Russert set a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles (15.06), while Cotton native Elizabeth Poskie took first in the 5,000, beating the field by 33 seconds with a time of 19:55.04.

UWS had three individual titles as Svenja Ruehl repeated as triple jump champion (11.22 meters) and teammate Taylor Phillips won the shot put (12.56 meters). Valerie Rowe added a 100-meter victory in 12.88.

• In the men's division, UWS secured the team title for the second consecutive year. The Yellowjackets earned 248 points, while second-place Minnesota-Morris had 115 and St. Scholastica took third with 104.

Senior Alexander Fathie won the 400 in 50.71 seconds and later was part of the 1,600-meter relay victors (3:24.75). Alex Dzikonski took first in the long jump (6.25 meters), while Noah Potratz won the javelin toss (51.76 meters).

Jacob Gallagher was the lone event-winner for the Saints (5,000 in 15:43.60).

• Minnesota Duluth won five events at the Meet of the Unsaintly in St. Paul on Saturday. Logan Rubeck took the 110-meter men's hurdles title (15.66), Ryan Tolkinen picked up a victory in the 400 hurdles (55.10), Breanna Colbenson won the 800 women's race (2:12.34), Erica Kesseh placed first in the 100 hurdles (14.90) and Elizabeth Brunner took the long jump title (5.48 meters).
