Minnesota Duluth sophomore Emilee Trost nabbed the top qualifying time with a first-place finish in a 1,500-meter preliminary race Thursday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships in Bradenton, Fla.
Trost, who ranked second in the 1,500 coming the meet, finished with a time of 4 minutes, 27.03 seconds, narrowly beating her fellow qualifiers. The 1,500-meter finals take place Saturday afternoon.
Bulldogs senior Breanna Colbenson qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase finals with a third-place finish in her heat. Colbenson's time (10:26.37) was good for the No. 7 slot among the 12 runners who qualified for the finals, which are scheduled to take place at 6:15 p.m. today.
• St. Scholastica's Hannah Russert sits in 11th place in the heptathlon after the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio. The senior, who has 2,646 points heading into the second and final day of competition today, took eighth in the shot put (10.17 meters), her highest finish of the day.
