The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference continues to solidify its plan for a return to sports competition in a move announced Tuesday, with Jan. 30 targeted as the restart date.
The UMAC’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors plans to reconvene in mid-January to reassess any changing circumstances relating to COVID-19 that could impact the sports of basketball, baseball, softball, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field.
The league, which includes St. Scholastica and Wisconsin-Superior, said UMAC competition would begin no earlier than Jan. 30, but UMAC teams can compete in nonconference games starting Jan. 1 so long as schools adhere to NCAA-approved recommendations from the Sports Science Institute (SSI).
The UMAC also approved a conference schedule for basketball, with an eight-game regular season starting Saturday, Jan. 30, and nine-team men’s and women’s conference tournaments starting Monday, March 1.
