Longtime Minnesota Duluth sports information director Bob Nygaard was informed Thursday that his position is being eliminated.
According to Lynne Williams, UMD’s marketing and public relations director, any recent staff changes are the result of cuts announced in December to balance UMD’s budget.
“These are always difficult decisions, but it is the unfortunate reality given the need to manage our limited financial resources,” according to Williams.
Nygaard, 60, a Duluth native, is the longest serving member of UMD’s athletic staff at 37 years, having joined the Bulldogs in September 1983 as a sports information assistant and assuming the sports information director duties later that year. In January 2014 he was promoted to assistant athletic director for communications, and in the summer of 2015, he was inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame at its annual convention in Orlando, Fla.
Nygaard will remain on staff through May 1.
