College softball: UWS sweeps Northland in UMAC doubleheader

Wisconsin-Superior made short work of Northland College on Sunday, claiming a UMAC doubleheader 7-3 and 12-1 in five innings in a rain-soaked home opener at Liebaert Field.

Sophomore outfielder Saige Patrick was 6-for-6 with three triples, a double and three runs scored on the day. Junior outfielder Ciarra Taipale of Duluth launched her third home run of the season, driving in four runs in the games.

Rookie shortstop Bailey Kinnunen of Grand Rapids had two doubles and added four RBIs as UWS (12-9 overall, 5-1 UMAC) upped its winning streak to five.

In the opener, the Lumberjills (4-18, 3-3) ended the scoreless streak of UWS pitcher Megan Pehrson at 21 2/3 innings, but the Grand Rapids graduate scattered seven hits and struck out five in the complete-game effort.

Senior right-hander Sarah Hendrickson tossed a five-hitter in the five-inning nightcap while UWS totaled 13 hits.
