College skiing: Saints compete at NCAA championships

St. Scholastica senior Jeremy Hecker and sophomore Sharmila Ahmed competed last weekend at the NCAA Championships at the Rikert Nordic Center in Ripton, Vt.

Hecker, of Andover, Minn., was among the leaders going into the final lap of the men's 20-kilometer freestyle and held on to finish a program-best 11th in 50 minutes, 36.8 second, just 23.4 seconds off the winning time of Utah's Miles Havlick.

Ahmed, of Savage, Minn., overcame two downhill crashes in the women's 15K mass start freestyle to finish 36th in 42:36.8. Colorado's JoAnne Reid won in 38:17.8.
