College men's hockey: 'Jackets outlast Falcons

Wisconsin-Superior took a two-goal lead late in the third period and held off Wisconsin-River Falls 3-2 on Thursday at Wessman Arena in Superior.

The game was the first of a two-game, home-and-home series, with the Yellowjackets (12-6-3, 5-6-0) playing the Falcons (13-5-3, 5-4-2) at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in River Falls.

On Thursday, UWS' Dylan Johnson scored on the power play on assists from Jordan Martin and Chad Lopez at 6:52 of the first. After River Falls' Trey Bagwell scored to tie the game, the Yellowjackets' Jonny Pace scored on assists from Lopez and Johnson with eight seconds left in the first.

The teams played scoreless hockey in the second period and for most of the third before UWS' Troy York made it 3-1 at 17:46 of the third on an assist from Lawson McDonald.

With an extra attacker on, River Falls' Josh Arnold scored at 19:23 but the Falcons couldn't get the game-tying goal past UWS goalie Myles Hektor, who finished with 19 saves.
