Senior center Brett Ervin scored 29 points in his return to the court from a knee injury and Minnesota Duluth hung with the University of Notre Dame for much of an 88-71 loss Saturday in an exhibition opener at South Bend, Ind.
Four Bulldogs reached double-digits in scoring and UMD led early against an NCAA Division I Irish team that was picked to finish seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.
Ervin made 11 of 17 field goals and hauled in five rebounds. Junior guard Pierre Newton led UMD with nine boards while also adding 13 points. Senior guard Reece Zoelle (12) and junior guard Brendon Pineda (11) also contributed for the Bulldogs.
Senior swingman Pat Connaughton posted a double-double for Notre Dame with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Demetrius Jackson led the Irish with 20 points.
UMD continues its exhibition season at 7 p.m. Thursday at Williams Arena in Minneapolis against another D-I foe, the University of Minnesota.
