College men's basketball: River Falls tops CSS in tournament opener

Austin Heidecker had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and Wisconsin-River Falls made three free throws in the final 30 seconds in holding on to beat St. Scholastica 81-78 on Friday in the St. Norbert Holiday Tournament in De Pere, Wis.

Julian Jackson added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Falcons (6-4), who play the St. Norbert/Alma winner at 7 p.m. today. St. Scholastica plays the loser at 5 p.m.

Jarod Wilken and Collin Anderson had 16 points apiece to lead the Saints (4-6), while freshman guard Quinn Fischer of Esko added 15 points and senior guard Nate Weets of Cloquet added 14 for St. Scholastica. The Saints shot 49.2 percent and connected on 11 of 27 3-pointers but were outrebounded 43-24.

After Wilken made a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to pull the Saints to within two at 80-78, Jalen Greenlee made the first of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining. Wilken turned the ball over, but St. Scholastica had one more chance after Matt Keller missed a pair of free throws. Fischer's 3-pointer in the closing seconds, however, was off the mark.
