College hockey: Yellowjackets rout Lumberjacks in exhibition tuneup

Teams met Wednesday with UWS blanking the Lumberjacks.

Chad Lopez and Connor Hamonic scored two goals apiece as Wisconsin-Superior skated past Northland 9-3 in their exhibition finale Friday night in men’s college hockey at Wessman Arena.

UWS, which blanked the Lumberjacks 3-0 Wednesday in their exhibition opener, had a dominating 62-23 shot advantage this time around.

The same teams rematch at 7 p.m. Wednesday in their WIAC opener in Ashland.

  • The UWS women’s exhibition at Northland was canceled. The same teams open WIAC play at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wessman Arena.

Saints open season with win at Augsburg

The St. Scholastica women’s hockey team got goals from five players en route to a 5-1 season-opening nonconference victory over Augsburg in Minneapolis.

Trailing 1-0, CSS erupted with three goals in the third period by Kayla Kasel, freshman Allie Bussey of Hibbing and Ashley Healy.

Lori Huseby had 34 saves for the Saints, while Abby Bollig and Mara McClain combined on 23 stops for Augsburg.
