Whitecaps defeat UMD women
Three former collegiate forwards led the way Saturday afternoon as the Minnesota Whitecaps of Minneapolis defeated No. 6-ranked Minnesota Duluth 5-3 in an exhibition game before 753 fans at Amsoil Arena. UMD won Friday's opener 2-1 in overtime.
Former Bemidji State player Erin Cody and Allie Thunstrom, from Boston College, each had two goals for the Whitecaps, a post-collegiate team, while former Minnesota Duluth center Jenny Potter added a goal.
UMD junior Katie Wilson scored twice. Seniors Jennifer Harss and Lana Steck shared time in goal for the Bulldogs. Former Princeton goalie Megan van Beusekom-Sweerin had 31 saves for the Whitecaps. The Bulldogs led in shots on goal 34-32.
UMD opens the regular season Oct. 8-9 at home against No. 5 Boston College.
