College hockey: UMD women start fast, hang on in win

Anna Klein scored 57 seconds into Minnesota Duluth's WCHA road game Friday night at St. Cloud State, and when teammate Anneke Linser doubled the lead 14 minutes later, the Bulldogs appeared well on their way to a comfortable victory.

But goalie Janine Alder buckled down and kept the Huskies afloat, and Julia Tylke halved St. Cloud's deficit less than eight minutes into the third period. But that was all the offense the home team could muster as UMD won its third straight, 2-1 in front of 409 fans at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Alder withstood the Bulldogs' pressure all night and finished with 39 saves. Her counterpart, meanwhile, UMD freshman Emma Soderberg, stopped 15 shots in her first collegiate start. She played in place of Maddie Rooney, who was given the night off.

Jalyn Elmes recorded a pair of assists for the Bulldogs (5-3-1 overall, 3-3-1 WCHA).

The same two teams rematch at 3:07 p.m. today in St. Cloud.
