College hockey: UMD women beat Whitecaps

The Minnesota Duluth women took a four-goal lead, sparked by two veterans and two freshmen, and went on to beat the Minnesota Whitecaps 5-3 to open the 2012-13 season in an exhibition at Amsoil Arena.

Seniors Audrey Cournoyer and Pernilla Winberg gave UMD a 2-0 lead after one period and rookie forwards Alivia Del Basso of Australia and Hannah Bramm of Tampa, Fla., made in 4-0 midway through the second.

Duluth native Amy Stech had a goal for the Whitecaps, a team of post-collegiate players based in

Minneapolis.

UMD led 34-26 in shots on goal. Freshman goalies Kayla Black and Sofia Carlstrom split time in goal for the Bulldogs.

The teams meet at 3:07 p.m. today at Amsoil Arena.
