Freshmen W Joe Colborne (first-round NHL pick by Boston) and D Patrick Wiercioch (second round by Ottawa) are the top draftees in coach George Gwozdecky's 15 years at Denver. The Pioneers outshot No. 1 Colorado College 88-49 last week, but tied 2-2 and lost 3-2 in facing CC goalie Richard Bachman. Sophomore G Marc Cheverie has succeeded Peter Mannino, who had a career mark of 63-32-5. Sophomore C Tyler Bozak leads scoring at 4-7-11

BULLDOGS update

UMD finished last season at Denver in the WCHA's first playoff round, losing 6-3 and 1-0, and the Pioneers went on to win the league's postseason title. Junior G Alex Stalock, with 43 straight starts, holds the UMD career record for goals-against average at 2.66 in 66 games. He was the only goalie to shut out Denver last season (3-0). C MacGregor Sharp and D Mike Montgomery lead in plus-minus at plus-5. Junior D Trent Palm (hip) is out
