MINNEAPOLIS -- Jacob Cepis scored early in the third period this afternoon to give Minnesota a 2-2 overtime tie with No. 2-ranked Minnesota Duluth in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association men's game at Mariucci Arena.
The Bulldogs (12-3-3 overall, 9-3-2 WCHA) led 2-1 after two periods on goals by Jack Connolly and Mike Seidel, yet Cepis gained a pass in the crease area to even things at 5:34 of the third.
The overtime was the ninth in 18 games for Minnesota. The Gophers (9-7-2, 6-6-2) led 1-0 on a Jake Hansen power-play goal with 2:34 left in the opening period.
UMD's Aaron Crandall and Minnesota's Kent Patterson were put to the test with UMD leading in shots on goal 43-36. In the third period, Crandall had to withstand a Minnesota 5-on-3 power play for 1:43, while Patterson had to face a UMD five-minute major power play later in the period.
