Minnesota Duluth earned the No. 4 seed in Super Region Three and will host No. 5 Emporia State on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division II football tournament.
The Bulldogs gathered in Romano Gym today to watch the selection show and erupted when their name was called. Emporia State is located in Emporia, Kan., 60 miles southwest of Topeka in the eastern part of the state.
Three teams in the six-team region have no losses and the other three have only one loss apiece in what is regarded as the toughest region in the nation. Three of the teams, including UMD, hail from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Northwest Missouri State (11-0) earned the region's top seed, followed by Minnesota State-Mankato (11-0), Henderson State (11-0), UMD (10-1), Emporia (9-1) and St. Cloud State (10-1). Northwest Missouri and Minnesota State have first-round byes while St. Cloud State plays at Henderson State in Saturday's other first-round game.
