Minnesota Duluth opened its season by splitting a nonconference doubleheader against host Pittsburg (Kan.) State on Saturday.

UMD recorded just five hits in the opener, a 9-4 loss. Tyler Wojciechowski gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double, but the Gorillas scored in three of the first four innings to take a comfortable lead. Tyler Midas added an eighth-inning solo home run and was the lone Bulldog with multiple hits.

Midas also paced the offense in the second game, a 12-11 win, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Bulldogs began the game with a five-run first inning, but the Gorillas scored 10 runs over the first three innings to take the lead. UMD battled back to tie it in the sixth inning before freshman outfielder Drew Stewart hit a solo shot in the eighth inning to win the game.
