  • The 21st annual Swain Cross Country Run was held yesterday on a rain-soaked Enger Park Golf Course in Duluth and for the second straight year Minneapolis Southwest won the varsity event. More than 800 runners from 53 schools were entered.
  • Legislation to legalize studded snow tires on Minnesota highways will be introduced in the special session of the Legislature by Rep. Jack Fena of Hibbing. Fena said yesterday the bill would allow use of the tires between Oct. 15 and May 1. News Tribune

  • Pillsbury Co. has sold Duluth's Moline Co., a manufacturer of bakery equipment, to an investment group led by Donald Moline. The Moline family had created the firm in 1945 and sold it to Pillsbury in 1972.
  • The Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation announced yesterday a $10.6 million grant to the Northeast Minnesota Initiative Fund over the next five years.
