Bulldogs' schedule for NCHC pod in Omaha undergoes major changes

A positive COVID-19 test at Colorado College results in the Bulldogs starting their season a day earlier. UMD will only play nine games instead of 10 now, however, in Omaha.

A positive COVID-19 test within the Colorado College program has forced the NCHC to alter the game schedule for its upcoming pod in Omaha, Nebraska. The changes announced Friday not only moved up the start of the 2020-21 season for Minnesota Duluth, but also cost the Bulldogs a game at Baxter Arena.

The Bulldogs will now play just nine games instead of 10 in Omaha and will open against the host Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks at 3:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1. UMD then plays Denver at 7:35 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, as originally scheduled.

UMD’s Dec. 4 game against Miami has been moved to Sunday, Dec. 6 at 4:05 p.m. The Bulldogs' originally scheduled game for Dec. 6 against Colorado College has been postponed to the second portion of the schedule, which will begin Jan. 1.

Below is UMD’s updated schedule of now just nine games in 19 days.

The Bulldogs, who are still scheduled to depart for Omaha on Sunday, will still play on back-to-back days just twice — Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 12-13 — after the Dec. 20 game against the Mavericks was moved to Dec. 1.

The NCHC also postponed a Dec. 3 game between the Tigers and St. Cloud State to the second half. The Huskies will also only play nine games. Colorado College will play eight.

The Tigers will travel to Minnesota to play the Bulldogs and Huskies sometime after the January 1 restart, giving SCSU and UMD another home game.

Colorado College is starting play in the pod a week later than everyone else as its 14-day quarantine is scheduled to end on Dec. 1. That's when the Tigers were to play the host Mavericks to open the NCHC season. That game was pushed back to Dec. 21.

Baxter Arena will now host 38 games in 21 days instead of 40 games in 20 days.
