UMD women's hockey: National championship rematches between Bulldogs, Buckeyes coming early, often in 2022-23

The WCHA released its 2022-23 schedule on Monday, featuring four games in the first 10 weeks between the defending NCAA champions from Ohio State and national runners-up from UMD.

DULUTH — College hockey fans won’t have to wait long for a rematch of the 2022 NCAA championship game as Minnesota Duluth and Ohio State will square off four times over the first 10 weeks of the 2022-23 season.

The WCHA released its composite schedule for 2022-23 on Monday, and it includes the Bulldogs and Buckeyes playing their first series the weekend of Oct. 21-23 in Columbus, Ohio, and again Dec. 2-3 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.

The Buckeyes beat the Bulldogs 3-2 in the final of last year’s NCAA Frozen Four at Pegula Ice Arena on the campus of Penn State University in University Park, Pennsylvania. The 2023 NCAA Frozen Four will take place March 17-18 at Amsoil Arena.

In addition to Ohio State, UMD has two more NCAA tournament rematches scheduled for the first 10 weeks of the 2022-23 season, including a series at Minnesota the weekend of Nov. 4-6 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. UMD beat the Gophers 2-1 in an NCAA quarterfinal at Ridder last year to reach the Frozen Four for a second consecutive season.

The other NCAA tournament rematch for UMD is a nonconference series against Harvard slated for Nov. 18-19 at Amsoil Arena. The Bulldogs beat the Crimson 4-0 in a first round NCAA tournament game last year in Minneapolis.

Monday’s schedule release by the WCHA only included league games, and exact dates were not included for series, just the weekend, as some schools — like Wisconsin and St. Thomas — will schedule home games on Sundays.

The exact dates for UMD home series — including the nonconference series with Harvard — can be found via the athletic department’s season ticket brochure .

Below is where the Bulldogs 2022-23 schedule stands. With 30 games scheduled for next season as of now, UMD has room to schedule two more nonconference series (or four total nonconference games).
