DULUTH — Minnesota Duluth will start the 2022-23 season ranked in the top five nationally when it drops the puck Oct. 1-2 against Arizona State at Amsoil Arena as the Bulldogs came in at No. 5 in the 2022 USCHO preseason men’s hockey poll released Monday.

Defending NCAA champion Denver took the top spot as three NCHC teams made up the top five, with North Dakota being ranked No. 4

The Bulldogs were one of three teams from the state of Minnesota ranked in the top five as Minnesota came in at No. 2 and Minnesota State at No. 3.

The annual NCHC preseason media poll and preseason team are expected later this week, with NCHC Media Day scheduled for Thursday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Bulldogs are coming off a fifth-place finish in the NCHC during the 2021-22 regular season, however, they went on to win the NCHC Frozen Faceoff at Xcel Energy Center before falling to eventual national champion Denver in an NCAA regional final in Loveland, Colorado.

GET CAUGHT UP ON THE 2022 UMD MEN'S HOCKEY OFFSEASON:
A look at where the UMD men's and women's hockey players who elected to transfer wound up for the 2022-23 season. And who is coming back to Amsoil Arena as an opponent?
Cody Chupp was interviewed by Scott Sandelin the last time there was a vacancy on the Bulldogs coaching staff, but instead UMD brought back Derek Plante.
A former goaltender at Notre Dame and volunteer goaltending coach for the Wisconsin women's hockey team, Karr brings almost two decades of experience leading NCAA Division II athletic departments that also feature NCAA Division I hockey programs.
A resident of Hermantown and native of Cloquet, Derek Plante was a development coach for the Blackhawks from 2015-2020.
Isaac Howard, a winger who will join Minnesota Duluth as a freshman in the fall, became the fifth Bulldog taken in the first round of the NHL Draft. He was selected No. 31 overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday in Montreal.
Three Bulldogs were taken on the second and final day of the 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal, with Hermantown's Zam Plante going in the fifth round to the Pittsburgh Penguins. A pair of UMD centermen were also drafted as freshman Cole Spicer was selected in the fourth round by the Boston Bruins and sophomore Dominic James was selected in the sixth round by the Chicago Blackhawks.
The extension announced Friday is subject to approval by the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. It adds two more years onto the extension that Sandelin signed in 2019 and shifts a portion of his compensation from his salary to his retirement fund.
Josh Berlo is leaving the University of Minnesota Duluth after nine seasons to become vice chancellor of athletics for the Pioneers. While Berlo's first job as athletic director got off to a controversial start, he leaves the university a popular administrator.

UMD has made seven consecutive NCAA tournaments and saw its run of four-straight NCAA Frozen Four appearances — including back-to-back NCAA titles in 2018 and 2019 — snuffed out by the Pioneers a year ago.

Scott Sandelin, entering his 23rd year as coach of the Bulldogs, brings back just 14 from last year’s team, including two fifth-year seniors — Jesse Jacques and Tanner Laderoute. UMD has brought in 10 freshmen — including 2022 Tampa Bay Lightning first-round draft pick Isaac Howard — and a pair of transfers in former Miami captain Derek Daschke and former Maine goaltender Matthew Thiessen.
