Greg Kessler, wildlife manager for the Department of Natural Resources in Brule, was awarded the wildlife biologist of the year award by colleagues at an annual state wildlife meeting in Appleton, Wis., on Jan. 13, the Wisconsin DNR said in a news release.

Much of Kessler's work, which includes forest management, is done in Douglas and northwestern Bayfield counties, where he manages four State Natural Areas. Kessler also is the DNR liaison to a natural areas friends' group.

Kessler's work also includes timber wolf-population monitoring and management, issuing landowner permits to control wolves causing agricultural damage and condutcing surveys for pine martins, trumpeter swans, anurans, Sandhill cranes and marsh birds.
