Vonn skis with injured thumb, falls on run
VAL D'ISERE, France -- At least Lindsey Vonn didn't reinjure her thumb.
Skiing only four days after she had surgery on a severed tendon in her right thumb, the American was second after the opening run Saturday of the world championship slalom won by Germany's Maria Riesch.
Wearing a specially designed splint, and duct tape all around her glove that made it look like she was ready for the ring, Vonn knocked gates out of her way like a prizefighter.
But she was unable to plant her right pole properly and fell in her second trip down, crashed through a gate and slid downhill for about 70 yards. Then she got back up and skied down to congratulate Riesch.

Peppers wants to leave Panthers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Julius Peppers was polite, insistent that he has no problems with his coaches and stressed that North Carolina will always be his home.
The four-time Pro Bowl defensive end just doesn't want to play for Carolina anymore -- and hopes the Panthers grant the impending NFL free agent his wish by not placing the franchise tag on him.
"If they decide to use the tag on me, the first thing that I'll be doing is requesting a trade," Peppers said Saturday. "Then anything after, basically I don't know what would be the course of action."
