While the temperatures continue to fall, the excitement is rising for anglers young and old as they prepare for Duluth's Big Jig Ice Fishing Contest.
This Sunday (Feb. 8) Pike Lake will once again be the site for the University of Minnesota Duluth Athletic Department's ninth annual event, which runs from 12 noon to 3 p.m.
2009 Big Jig Contest prizes are worth over $60,000 for the top 100 catches. The list includes a 2008 Scion XB (first place), a three-day trip with Voyagaire Houseboats (second prize), a Honda BF20 HP 4-Stroke Outdoor Motor (third Prize), a 2009 Yamaha Grizzly 350 4x4 ATV (50th prize) and $1,000 in cash (100th largest fish).
"I'm really pleased with the success we've had with this event in the past," said UMD Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bob Nielson. "We've gotten a lot of feedback over the years regarding how fun it is and the great prizes which are offered. The one thing we take pride in is the people we have staffing the Big Jig. They are almost all UMD student-athletes and athletic staff -- the ones who ultimately benefit from the event."
Proceeds from the Big Jig support the UMD athletic scholarship fund. For entry information, call 788-2544 or go to www.umdbulldogs.com .
