College men's basketball: Locals lead Saints past Lions
St. Scholastica's local contingent came up big on Wednesday, with Brandon Newman of Barnum scoring 17 points and Nate Weets of Cloquet coming off the bench to add 13 as the Saints rolled to an 89-66 nonconference victory over winless Finlandia on Wednesday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center in Hancock, Mich.
Quinn Fischer of Esko added points as nine players scored at least five points apiece for St. Scholastica (6-8), which drained a season-high 13 3-pointers on 40.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Weets helped the Saints outscore Finland 40-14 off the bench.
Dylan Underwood had 17 points before fouling out to lead the Lions (0-12).
• Anderson Bazile Jr. scored 21 points and Northwestern broke from a 40-33 halftime lead in cruising to a 94-70 victory over Wisconsin-Superior in UMAC action from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium in Superior.
Brady Peterson and Noah Hill added 15 points apiece as four players reaching double figures in scoring for the Eagles (9-6 overall, 5-1 UMAC).
Mac Reykdal had 21 points and Montroy Scott added 15 to lead the Yellowjackets (2-13, 1-6).
