College men's basketball: Wieck fills out Bulldogs coaching staff

First-year Minnesota Duluth coach Justin Wieck announced the hiring of Casey Bruggeman and Tanner Kretchman as assistant coaches on Thursday.

Bruggeman spent the last two months as an assistant coach on the staff of Matt Reimer of St. Cloud State. The native of Pelican Rapids, Minn., was an assistant coach at Mary during the 2017-18 season and a graduate assistant for the Marauders in 2016-17.

Kretchman, a native of Fargo, N.D., just wrapped up four-year college career at Minnesota State-Moorhead, where he played for Wieck. Ketchman helped guide the Dragons to a pair of NSIC titles and three NCAA tournament appearances.

Wieck took over as head coach at UMD on May 1 after spending four seasons as an assistant coach at Moorhead.

• In addition to announcing the coaching hires Thursday, UMD boasted about another record-setting year of fundraising that saw the athletic department raise $1.9 million from 1,500 donors during the 2018 fiscal year, which wrapped up June 30. That figure includes current and future gifts.

UMD is currently in the process of renovating Romano Gymnasium. Over the last two years, "well over $1 million" has been raised for that project, including $500,000 during the 2018 fiscal year.
