The Duluth Huskies closed the books on the 2019 Northwoods League season with an 8-5 victory over the Willmar Stingers on Sunday night before 1,002 fans at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar, Minn.
The Huskies scored a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings and then tacked on three more in the eighth to take an 8-4 lead.
Willmar scored once in the ninth and loaded the bases before reliever Jack Corbell retired the final out.
Max Guzman (sixth home run of the season), Matt Hogan and Drew Downing each had two hits to lead the Huskies, who finished the second half of the season at 16-15 and were 29-38 overall.
A paperwork mixup cost the Huskies five victories, which would have tied them with Eau Claire atop the Great Plains East Division.
- Willmar won 9-1 at home Saturday night before 810 fans as starting pitcher Christopher Peres and two relievers combined on a four-hitter.
The Stingers totaled 10 hits -- two apiece by Justin King, Riley Johnson and James Gamble. Gamble drove in three runs, while King, Johnson and Daniel Walsh each scored twice.
