College baseball: UMD splits pair in Florida
Minnesota Duluth and Notre Dame College traded wins in a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla., with the Bulldogs taking the opener 5-3 before the Falcons bounced back with a 9-1 decision.
Junior right fielder Chris Saltzmann helped key the UMD triumph by going 2-for-3 and a two-run bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh inning that broke a 3-3 deadlock. Junior left fielder Drew Stewart scored twice for UMD, and senior Alex Ferguson, in his first start of the season and second appearance, gave up five hits and three earned runs before being lifted for sophomore Sean Flaherty in the fifth inning. Flaherty struck out three and allowed two hits the rest of the way to even his record at 1-1.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs (2-4) were outhit 12-5 by Notre Dame (6-9), which broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning and four-run fifth.
• No. 10 West Chester University scored eight runs in the top of the sixth to defeat UMD 8-2 Monday night in Kissimmee, Fla. Senior center fielder Cory Krolikowski had two of Bulldogs' five hits while junior designated hitter Reid Rubio (a fourth-inning double) and senior third baseman Ben Danielson (a seventh-inning solo homer) each drove in a run.
