Ely stays unbeaten in Central Plains
Nick Mathews had two doubles and drove in three runs Friday as Ely defeated Iola, Kan., 9-6 to stay unbeaten in the American Legion Division II Central Plains Regional in Wahpeton, N.D.
Ely (31-9) is 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament and faces Wahpeton at 1 p.m. today. Wahpeton defeated Plato, Minn., 1-0 Friday.
Winning pitcher Trevor Bernsdorf worked 5.2 innings in relief and allowed eight hits and struck out three. Greg Helget had three hits and scored three runs for Ely, Bernsdorf had two hits and two RBIs, and Cody Bialik, Sean Fisher and Jory Johnson each added two hits. Ely, with 14 hits, took a 5-0 lead with a four-run second inning.
