Despite digging out of an early hole with eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Duluth Huskies lost their fifth straight Northwoods League game Sunday, 11-9 to Mankato in front of 810 fans at a frigid Wade Stadium.
The Huskies trailed 4-0 after the third inning, but erupted for five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to grab an 8-4 lead. Six players had at least two hits for Duluth, including Dom Brugnoni, who was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
The MoonDogs scored twice in the eighth to make it 8-6, and the Huskies responded with a run in the home half of the frame to make it a three-run game.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, however, five consecutive Mankato players reached base during a five-run rally.
Five Duluth pitchers combined to allow 20 hits. The MoonDogs’ Nos. 1-4 hitters were 14 for 24. Peter Maris and Tanner Rockwell had four hits apiece, while Tyler Sullivan and Levi Scott each had three.
The two teams meet again at 6:35 p.m. today.
r In a late game Saturday, Jon McAllister led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a double and came around to score on one of three Duluth errors in a 2-1, extra-inning victory for host Waterloo.
It was the eighth straight win for the Bucks, who held the Huskies to just three hits in front of 1,755 fans.
