Auto racing: Northern Nationals underway

Three-time World of Outlaws champion "Slammin'" Sammy Swindell is among the drivers expected to compete at 6:30 p.m. today at the 30th annual Northern Nationals at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior.

Three-time World of Outlaws champion "Slammin'" Sammy Swindell is among the drivers expected to compete at 6:30 p.m. today at the 30th annual Northern Nationals at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior.

With a purse of more than $100,000 - the largest purse in track history - other top drivers are also expected tonight for the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints special, including Bill Balog, Kerry Madsen, Scotty Thiel, Jake Blackhurst, Jeremy Schultz, Scotty Neitzel and Steve Meyer. Thiel is just three points ahead of Blackhurst in the season points standings.

The opening night of the Northern Nationals was Thursday, but results weren't available when this edition went to press. The Nationals culminate at 6 p.m. Saturday, with Late Models being the top draw.
