Ashland County authorities today identified the two men who died when they broke through ice while snowmobiling on Lake Superior off Madeline Island earlier this week.

Joshua G. Reynolds, 30, and Mark J. Backes, 38, both of La Pointe, Wis., died late Wednesday or Thursday, Ashland County Sheriff Mick Brennan said in a news release.

The two men apparently were riding on a single snowmobile when they left Bayfield at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, bound for La Pointe on Madeline Island. They were reported overdue and missing at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

One of the men was found in open water at about 10 a.m. Thursday; rescue crews found the body of the second victim at about 1 p.m. The snowmobile was found partially submerged in the area of the South Channel.

The accident happened close to the same place where a 34-year-old Bayfield fishing guide, Jim Hudson, died Jan. 26 when his snowmobile went through the ice or into open water.
