Eric Birch knocked in two runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Alexandria Beetles to a 4-2 victory over the Duluth Huskies in Northwoods League baseball on Wednesday night before 973 spectators in Alexandria, Minn.
Duluth (11-11), which lost 9-1 to Alexandria on Tuesday night, rallied to tie the game Wednesday with two runs in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch and Mark Threlkeld RBI single.
Starter Frank DeJiulio pitched six solid innings for the Huskies but didn't earn a decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Threlkeld had two hits, including a double, while teammates Cody Asche and Pete Cappetta also had doubles.
Beetles starter David Randall didn't get a decision, either, despite allowing just two hits and no runs in seven innings. Kevin Vangheluwe (2-0) overcame a shaky eighth inning to get the win while Dan Lazzaroni pitched a perfect ninth to get his second save. Birch and Marcus Semien each had two hits to lead Alexandria (15-12).
The same teams play again at 6:05 p.m. today in Alexandria.
