Kelly Swank hit a pair of home runs to lead Minnesota Duluth to a 13-2 and 8-0 sweep of Upper Iowa in an NSIC softball doubleheader Saturday before 50 at Malosky Stadium.
Swank, Hermantown’s Jordyn Thomas and Emma Frost all went deep in the five-inning opener — including a grand slam by Thomas — while Sam Pederson got the pitching win, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in improving to 8-3.
Lauren Dixon tossed a five-hit shutout with four strikeouts in the six-inning rematch while Thomas, Lauren Oberle and Julia Gronholz each had a pair of hits to lead the Bulldogs (24-10 overall, 14-6), who have won four straight.
Kaylee Frenette and Sydney Wilcox had three hits apiece on the day to lead the Peacocks (10-23, 6-14).
Bulldogs bounce back for split
Minnesota Duluth dropped the first game to Mary 10-0 but bounced back to win the rematch 13-9 in an NSIC baseball doubleheader before 150 at Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Pitchers Austin Wagner, Mitch Oehme and Anthony Leedle combined to hold UMD to just one hit in the seven-inning opener while striking out 12. Ty Jones had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs to pace the offense, while Trevor Gustafson had the lone hit for the Bulldogs.
The second game started much better for UMD with Anders Brown blasting a three-run home run in the top of the first inning as the Bulldogs pounded out 12 hits. Brown finished with three walks, three runs and four RBIs while Brandt Kolpack and Tosten Mann had three hits apiece for UMD (10-19 overall, 7-16 NSIC). Derek Shoen and Alec Battest hit home runs to lead the Marauders (14-14, 11-10).
